Is Playing Bingo Considered Haram?

12 Jun, 2022

In Islam, every form of gambling is strictly forbidden and, therefore, a sin. Bingo is a game of chance with a mathematical edge over the players, and if you play it – you are gambling.

The reason why it’s considered a sin is that you are hoping to benefit by relying on sheer luck instead of putting in the hard work which would be the honourable way of making a living.

We all know that no good things are associated with gambling. The sins that surround gambling halls include:

  • Nudity
  • Drugs
  • Greed

That is no suitable environment for a Muslim who wants to be and stay in line with their book’s teachings.

Here is what the Quran has to say about gambling. (1)

Shaytaan wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drink) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from al-salaat (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?”[al-Maa’idah 5:90-91]

There are no specific quotes in the Quran mentioning bingo as the book is older than the game itself.

Now, if you were to play bingo with material prizes in a social environment, you could get philosophical about whether it should be considered haram or not.

However, according to experts, you should still not participate in bingo games even if they have no or low prizes because you’d associate with people who are likely to sin.

“O you who believe! Wine, gambling, altars and divining arrows are filth from the work of Satan. Therefore, refrain from it, so that you may be successful. Satan wishes only to plant enmity and malice between you through wine and gambling, and to prevent you from the remembrance of Allah and from Salāh (prayer). Would you, then, abstain?” (5:91)

The truth is that once you start playing games of chance – even for small prizes in social circles – you might start enjoying it more than you should and look for more thrilling options, like casino games.

That’s how you could develop a gambling addiction.

I think it’s best to stay away from gambling, whether you are a Muslim or not – because the rule is that if you play with fire, you are likely to get burned.

Gambling has caused more harm than good for players and can have devastating consequences on you, your friends and your family.

  • Gambling causes financial losses by default.
  • Gambling can cause addiction and other illnesses.

We conclude that playing bingo is haram due to the sinful environment, association with gamblers, and ill-effects playing games of chance generally cause.
